Topology specifies the shape of the network of rules for the network. Some of the topologies are as follows:

Bus topology: Using Bus topology we can connect all devices with a central cable called Bus or Backbone. In this topology data transmit from a single cable to all nodes. It is very difficult to implement a private concept in this topology. If there is a problem in any node or bus, then the whole network can collapse. It is very simple to implement and is less expensive.

Advantages of Bus topology :

  1. It is simple and reliable for a small network.
  2. It is less expensive
  3. .It is suitable for office networks.

Disadvantages of Bus topology:

  1. It is very difficult to extend.
  2. It is very expensive if connect more system or problem occurs with hardware.

Star topology: It is connected with a central hub. It is also called a switch or router. It is the most fastest and secure network model. But it is expensive to implement because it specifies server or client architecture. It provides privacy control for the client computer.

Advantages of Star topology:

  1. It is easy to modify and can add more computers without disturbing the rest of the computer.
  2. In this topology, we can easily diagnose the whole network by using a server.

Disadvantages of Star topology:

  1. It is expensive because use individual wire for all client computer.
  2. If a server fails then the whole network fails to operate.

Ring topology: In this topology each system share data with another system. It allows linking each computer with another computer. It doesn’t follow client/server architecture. It is less expensive but doesn’t follow the security concept. It can collapse with the failure of any system or network.

Advantages of Ring topology:

  1. It shares computer information with networks.
  2. It is an almost powerful network topology due to the sharing of information.

Disadvantages of Ring topology:

  1. Failure of one computer in the ring affects the whole network.
  2. It is very difficult to analyze.

Tree topology: It is also called hierarchical topology. It is quite close to Star topology where node or client connected with the central hub or server but in this topology, client and server can be classified in various levels. It can be extended or designed very large network.

Advantages of Tree topology:

  1. It allows extending a very large amount of client computers.
  2. It performs troubleshooting very easily.

Disadvantages of Tree topology :

  1. It needs an expensive server.
  2. If a server fails then the whole network fails to operate.
